SSC CGL Photo & Signature Size — Pixels, KB & Format

The Staff Selection Commission Combined Graduate Level Examination (SSC CGL) recruits for graduate-level government posts. Official application portal: ssc.gov.in. This independent guide covers the photo and signature instructions in the CGL 2026 notice dated 21 May 2026.

The photo is captured live; do not photograph an existing photo. For signatures, the source includes differing centimetre widths and an example screen specifying 300 DPI. The tool below checks bytes and optional pixels, and does not set or verify physical size or DPI.

Prepare an SSC CGL signature

The preset checks 10,000–19,500 bytes and JPG format. Transparent areas become white; existing backgrounds are not removed. Width and Height are optional and start blank. If the portal enforces DPI or physical dimensions, use an editor supporting those settings and recheck the resulting bytes.

Choose a limit. Results leave a 500-byte safety margin.

Signature is selected. The preset checks 10–20KB with a 500-byte upper margin; exact pixels are deliberately blank because the cited instructions do not give a fixed pixel pair. Edits are your requested values, not new official SSC specifications.

Form requirements

Keep the preset values unless your current official instructions differ. Exact resizing can change proportions; crop a copy first. Fixed pixels stay fixed, even if the minimum cannot be reached. Failed results show actual values and have no download. Clearing a requirement leaves it unchecked.

Prepare the signature and use the official live-photo step

  1. Crop a clear originalRemove excess paper and keep all pen strokes visible. Optional crop controls are general editing choices.
  2. Check the fileSelect the signature. Read its actual bytes, optional pixel checks and JPG format, then inspect the preview.
  3. Complete the applicationFollow SSC’s live camera step and current physical/scanner instructions. A file-size pass does not complete those checks.

Photo capture on the official SSC portal

The notice describes taking a live photograph through a webcam or mobile device while filling the application. Use good light and a plain background, keep the camera at eye level and your whole face within the indicated area, and remove a cap, mask or spectacles. Never capture an image of an existing photograph. Use the portal’s own instructions if you need its mobile capture route; this site does not access your camera or submit the application.

Physical dimensions and DPI: what the source actually says

Paragraph 9.6 on page 18 gives a signature about 6.0 × 2.0 cm. Annexure IV on page 71 gives about 4.0 × 2.0 cm. The example upload screen in Annexure IVA, page 80, shows 6.0 × 2.0 cm at 300 DPI. These are source statements, not a single unambiguous fixed-pixel rule.

This tool does not resolve those differing widths, set DPI metadata or certify print dimensions. It leaves exact pixels blank rather than converting an assumed DPI into an alleged official pixel size. Check the current application instructions or ask SSC to clarify a conflict. If the portal checks physical size or DPI, use an editor that supports those settings, then recheck file size and legibility.

When a signature is too small or unclear

Low-detail signatures may remain below 10KB after encoding. They are marked failed with actual values and no download, rather than padded or enlarged beyond fixed pixels to manufacture a pass. Use a clearer original or the increase-size link in the failed result. Keep every requirement your current form gives, and do not lower an official minimum just to obtain a file.

The preview still needs your inspection for broken, merged or miniature strokes. Background, ink, identity, scanner settings and physical dimensions are not automatic checks here. Follow the instructions for your recruitment year; this guide is not an SSC approval service.

Frequently asked questions

What is the SSC CGL photo size in KB and pixels?

The reviewed CGL 2026 notice requires live photo capture in the official application. It does not ask you to prepare a resized old photo file for that step. Use the portal camera instructions rather than an old photo-upload size.

What is the SSC CGL signature size?

The cited instructions specify a scanned signature in JPG/JPEG format, 10–20KB. This preset checks 10,000–19,500 bytes, including the site’s 500-byte upper safety margin. Physical-size and scanner instructions require a separate review.

How many pixels should my SSC CGL signature have?

The cited source sections do not specify one fixed pixel width and height. They give physical dimensions, with differing widths in the main text and annexure. Exact pixel fields therefore start blank. Enter both only if your current official form gives specific pixel values; a conversion based on an assumed DPI is not an official pixel rule.

Why does the notice show both 6 × 2 cm and 4 × 2 cm?

Paragraph 9.6 gives about 6.0 × 2.0 cm, while Annexure IV gives about 4.0 × 2.0 cm. The example upload screen on page 80 shows 6.0 × 2.0 cm at 300 DPI. This tool does not choose a definitive physical specification or set DPI metadata. Confirm the current portal’s instructions with SSC if unclear.

Why can my signature fail the 10KB minimum?

A simple scan can encode below the minimum. Signature mode preserves its quality floor and reports the actual size without a download when a requirement fails. Use a clearer original or the increase-size link in the result, retaining any pixel requirements your form actually gives.

Can I crop my signature before compression?

Yes. Enable the optional crop, keep every pen stroke inside the frame and review the preview. The crop ratios are general editing controls, not official SSC specifications. Enter exact pixels only when you have a confirmed requirement; do not repeatedly compress an already blurred image.

Are images uploaded, and does passing mean SSC will accept the file?

Files stay in your browser and are processed by a local Worker. Passing checks the requested byte range, any specified exact pixels and JPG format. It does not verify identity, physical size, DPI, ink, background or legibility, and does not guarantee application acceptance.
